The combination of camping, ski resort and skiing sounds unusual at first but it goes together better than you might think!
Camping in winter is perfect for spending an adventurous outdoor vacation in the snow. The activities are almost unlimited - from skiing or snowboarding, ski and splitboard tours to snowshoeing. Here, everyone gets on the slopes and their money's worth.
Advantages of camping and winter sports
The most important concern of passionate skiers is to be the first on the freshly prepared slopes. No problem, if you spend the night directly in the ski area with your camper! Most campsites are close to the lifts, so you can be there within ten minutes.
Spending the night at the ski lift
If that's not enough, you can also set up your parking space directly at the lift parking lot. However, this isn't allowed in all ski resorts but in some it is not explicitly forbidden. In the following ski areas we have made good experiences with camping at the parking lot:
Kitzsteinhorn, Mühlbach(Hochkönig)
Flachau (here it's official)
Rußbach (Dachstein West)
Flachauwinkel (towards Zauchensee)
Katschberg (Sankt Margarethen).
Tip: Inform yourself in advance at the respective ski resort, so that you are not sent away by the mountain rescue.
If you like a lot of variety, camping gives you the opportunity to choose your camping ski area every day. You can drive to different ski resorts in the Alps, so it's guaranteed not to be boring during your winter vacation.
With the campervan you have a snow guarantee during your winter vacation. You are not bound to an alpine region, but can choose your campsite spontaneously according to snow conditions and weather. With a little luck, winter camping in the cold season may even work in Germany, in the Berchtesgaden Alps or Garmisch-Partenkirchen. If there isn't enough snow here, you can go to Austria and set up camp near the slopes in the Ötztal, Salzburger Land or even in glacier ski areas.
Variety of winter sports
Skiing, snowboarding and fun on the slopes
Attention winter sports enthusiasts! With the campervan you can spend the perfect day on the slopes. Get all the information about the weather, the slopes and snow conditions after getting up and just drive to the ski resort with the best conditions. Choose your campsite centrally between several ski resorts and you'll be spoilt for choice every day.
If you're looking for powder or off-slopes, your mini camper will take you to the perfect starting points. Either you look for a secluded campsite or a pitch in nature. Here you're away from ski tourism and can enjoy winter with all its sporting possibilities.
Ski and Splitboard Tours
Ski touring, with its many lifts, artificial snow and clearings, is not the most sustainable type of winter holiday. Have you ever thought about ski or splitboard tours? This involves running up the mountain off-piste with your ski touring skis or splitboard. Once you've done that, you'll be rewarded with a unique descent through a (in the best case) still untouched snow cover.
Camping and touring can be combined well, because you can stay overnight in your campervan away from popular routes and ski resorts. This way you have the enchanting winter landscape all to yourself.
You've never been on a splitboard tour but you'd like to try it out? Then we have just the thing for you - the Splitboard Festival at Achensee. Here you can try out the equipment of different manufacturers and go on guided splitboard tours. You can find more information about splitboards on freeride-guide.com. Here you can rent professional equipment and book guided tours - no matter if beginner or pro.
Snowshoeing
Even for non-skiers, camping in winter offers many activities. In Austria there are fantastic trails for snowshoeing. Get out of the camper and into nature! Here are our favorite routes for a snowshoe hike:
Tux Alps: Viggarspitze (2,306m) via Boscheben (2,035) from Meißner Haus (1,707m): 6km, 600 vertical meters, 6:00h walking time, difficulty: difficult.
Southern and Western Styria: Snowshoe hike Dreieckkogel: 12km, 450 meters of altitude difference, 4:00h walking time, difficulty: medium
Hochsteiermark: Romantic circular hiking trail in Mitterbach: 7,5km, 195 vertical meters, 2:30h walking time, difficulty: easy
A sustainable alternative to alpine skiing is cross-country skiing. Even as a beginner you'll quickly find your way around a groomed trail and have fun. If you want it a little more strenuous, you can try skating. To master the technique properly, you can book a course and soon you'll be gliding through snowy valleys.
Our favorite winter campsites
Camping in winter can be pure comfort, you just need the right campsite. Many campsites are located in close proximity to the ski lift in popular ski resorts. Often a ski bus service or ski shuttle is also offered. There are also paved sanitary facilities for guests, as well as heated ski and drying rooms.
A campground in winter is not the same as a campground in summer. So that you can also relax after a long day of skiing while camping, many campsites in the camping ski area offer a wellness area with sauna landscape. There the camping vacation becomes a luxury vacation.
Our favorite campsites for the combination of skiing and camping are: Trixi Ferienpark, Caravan Park Sexten and Camping Resort Zugspitze. More detailed information about the facilities of the campsites and further recommendations for wellness resorts and sports camps you can find in our blog article Winter campsites - our favorites.
Camper winter equipment
Whether you stay at winter campsites in the camping ski area, at the mountain railroad or in the middle of the mountain world - with our campervans you will not freeze. All our Off vehicles are equipped with a parking heater. In order to keep the warmth inside the campervan, you can book insulation for the windows and roof tents with all our vehicles. With snow chains the equipment is complete and you're prepared for (almost) every snow level.
In our Off fact check, we dispel the prejudices about winter camping and tell you what you should look out for when camping in winter, so that it will be a pleasantly warm adventure. We also explain how to use our winter equipment properly and what you should pack for camping.
So put on your cozy socks and skis, get ready and go winter camping!
