There are some things you just never get enough of. Camping by the lake is definitely one of them! One of them that shouldn't be missing from your bucket list is Schliersee in Upper Bavaria. You can find all the information about camping at Schliersee here.

In Bavaria there's quite a lot of lakes - and above all a lot of beautiful ones! The federal state has more than 200 lakes to offer. One of them is Lake Schliersee in the foothills of the Bavarian Alps, which delights visitors with its mountain panorama, good water quality, great camping opportunities, activities and excursion destinations. Although it can no longer really be called an insider tip, it is less popular than other regions and lakes in the foothills of the Alps. It is therefore the perfect place for a holiday to unwind in beautiful Bavarian nature: swimming, hiking, cycling, climbing, tobogganing, skiing or feasting in rustic inns. Find out here what you can do on your camping trip to Schliersee and what else there is to consider.

Camping at Lake Schliersee

About the lake & the region

Lake Schliersee is an all-time favourite among the Bavarian lakes! It is located around 50 kilometres south of Munich and 10 kilometres to the east of Lake Tegernsee. Schliersee is not quite as large as its neighbour, with an area of just over 2 square kilometres and a maximum depth of 40.5 metres. It owes its formation to the last great ice age over 10,000 years ago. Today it is located in the Mangfallgebirge, part of the Bavarian Pre-Alps. And that's exactly what it's known and loved for: the surrounding mountains, which you have a great view of from the lake - and from the top of the mountain, you have a wonderful view of the lake down into the valley. The dark blue water and the mountain backdrop immediately give you a feeling of relaxation and adventure. In summer, the lake is popular for swimming, hiking and cycling, but fans of winter camping also appreciate its proximity to the Spitzingsee and Sudelfeld ski areas.
💡 Fun fact: Lake Schliersee is officially owned by the Free State of Bavaria.

Directions to Schliersee Camping

Thanks to its proximity to Munich, Schliersee is easy to reach and is therefore also a popular destination among the residents of the Bavarian capital. From Munich, it takes almost exactly one hour by camper: you can reach your destination quickly after around 50 kilometres via the A8 towards Schliersee. You can also easily reach the lake by train if you take the regional train from Munich main station to Bayerischzell.

Schliersee with dog & children

Lake Schliersee is also a great destination for travelling with children or dogs. At the often shallow bathing spots, little holidaymakers can let off steam while splashing around and dogs are also allowed at most places on the lake and campsites. If you hire a campervan from Off, your four-legged friends are always very welcome (and will also be given plenty of snacks by us!). Simply select the dog camper option when making your booking so that an extra cleaning service is provided for the camper.

Outdoor activities for Schliersee Camping

You can fill your time camping at Schliersee with lots of fun things to do. With the wide range of activities waiting for you, you'll only get bored if you feel like it. For all those looking for cool activities, here are some classics & Schliersee insider tips:

Swimming at Schliersee Camping

The No. 1 activity at Schliersee is: get into the cool water! There are many beautiful spots around the lake for this. What's more, in the high season you can book the Schliersee lido from 3€ per person. This is a great experience, especially for children, as the lido has a water trampoline and climbing frame, a beach volleyball court and a diving tower. And if you're hungry, you can get a tasty meal there for little money. Because: lido fries at Schliersee are perhaps even better than outdoor pool fries anyway.

Walking & hiking at Schliersee Camping

Schliersee has many beautiful circular trails around the lake. For example, you can start many routes directly from the Schliersee campsite.
A hike up one of the surrounding mountains should also not be missing from your holiday programme. Fortunately, the numerous mountain huts provide refreshments. After all, nothing motivates you more on the ascent than the anticipation of a fresh Kaiserschmarrn ... 😇 Tips for popular hikes can be found here.

Cycling at Schliersee Camping

Cycling is also one of the most popular activities at Schliersee. When the weather is nice, we definitely recommend a bike tour. There are well-developed cycle paths and many beautiful viewpoints that are definitely worth a tour. For inspiration for cycling tours at Schliersee, you can take a look here.

Boating at Schliersee Camping

If you want to marvel at Lake Schliersee not only from the shore but also from the water, you can of course hire a boat (for around €80 per day). You can do this at the Café Milchhäusl boat hire centre, which offers rowing boats, pedal boats (with a cool bathing ladder!), motorboats and even sailing boats. If you fancy it, you can also try your hand at fishing at Schliersee Camping. But make sure you only go fishing where it is permitted. You should also obtain a fishing licence in advance.
If you don't want to take the helm yourself, you can also take a relaxing cruise across the Schliersee: The Schliersee III, a ship built in Holland in 1993, sails across the lake every hour in good weather.

Climbing in the Tegernsee-Schliersee region

The area around Lake Schliersee offers a wide range of climbing opportunities, making the region a popular destination for sport climbers. Here you can find an overview of climbing areas for different levels of experience.

To immerse yourself in ancient times, you can visit the Marcus Wasweier open-air museum in Schliersee from €10 per person. Watch the craftsmen and women who work in the museum village every day, visit one of the events or enjoy Bavarian specialities with a mountain view in the ‘Zum Wofen’ beer garden. The drinks menu even includes beer from the museum's own historic Schöpfbrauerei brewery.

Museum of local history Schliersee & Schredlhaus

It was only a few years ago that conservationists discovered that the so-called Schredlhaus at Schliersee has such an exciting history to hide. It is the best-preserved medieval log cabin in Bavaria! It is much older than previously thought and was built in 1447. The Schredlhaus is a museum of local history where you can learn about everyday life in the Schliersee region in the past.

SLYRS Erlebniswelt

A tip for adults only 😉 Many people are probably familiar with the SLYRS brand of whisky. But very few people know it: As the name reveals on closer inspection, the drink comes from Schliersee and is made with barley malt from Bavaria. In the Erlebniswelt, you can watch the team at work and visit the distillery.
