Camping season is barbecue season! In this blog article you'll find out how to have the perfect barbecue on your camping holiday and we'll tell you our favourite barbecue recipe.

Equipment

Charcoal grill, gas grill or electric grill- with these choices the decision often is difficult. So what's best for barbecuing on a camping holiday?
An electric grill is less suitable for camping because you need a permanent power supply. This makes you rather inflexible on holiday. Charcoal grills on the other hand are more practical because you can simply set them up, light the charcoal and get started. However, you must pay attention to the campsite's regulations because operators often are afraid of accidental fires on hot summer days. Gas grills on the other hand are allowed almost everywhere. The problem is that gas bottles are often heavy and unwieldy. Nevertheless, both types of barbecue are great for camping.
Your decision should be made according to the following criteria: Personal preferences, handling and sustainability.

Sustainability when barbecuing on a camping holiday

Everyone knows them - the littered meadows in summer after a group of people has had a nice outdoor barbecue. That doesn't have to be the case. Therefore, when barbecuing always make sure that you leave the place exactly as you found it or even better: even cleaner.
You should also pay attention to the sustainable production of the barbecue model itself. Disposable barbecues are therefore not desirable here. The barbecues from Knister Grill are made in Germany and produced sustainably. This means the highest quality and short transport routes. You can also replace broken parts individually. With so much sustainability, barbecuing on a camping holiday is twice as much fun! And due of their practical design and an easy-to-mount holder for the bicycle handlebars Knister grills are a great companion for your next bicycle tour. In addition, the Knister Grill Original can be extended to double its size, perfect for friends and family.
Not only the grill itself but also the charcoal for your charcoal grill should be sustainable. Tropical and subtropical forests are still being cleared for the production of charcoal. This not only means further deforestation of the rainforests but also enormous transport distances. So when buying charcoal look for charcoal from European forests. Beech wood is best suited here. The FSC seal on packaging also indicates sustainably produced charcoal.
Ecological alternatives for barbecue charcoal can also be found in agricultural waste. Olive pits and grapevines or coconut shells (but again, note the transport routes) are perfect. You can find these alternatives to barbecue charcoal in organic markets or online.

What you should pay attention to

Of course, there are also some things you should pay attention to when barbecuing on a camping holiday.
As mentioned at the beginning you should always observe the rules of the campsite. On dry and hot summer days barbecues may be completely prohibited. Many campsites have special barbecue areas where barbecues are allowed. In addition, barbecuing over an open fire is only allowed at designated fireplaces.
It's also an unwritten camping law that neighbours should not be disturbed by smoke. This way, barbecuing on a camping holiday is not only fun for you but also for your neighbours.
Unfortunately, as always, after a nice and relaxed barbecue there's still the washing up to do. As with other dishes, you should only wash your cutlery, etc. at sinks specifically designed for this purpose. The washbasins in the toilet blocks are taboo.

Our favourite barbecue recipe

Whether meat or vegetables, the barbecue is the perfect companion for your camping trip. It's super easy to create and enjoy great dishes. Our favourite barbecue recipe is grilled sausage skewers.

Grilled sausage skewers

For this delicious dish (4 skewers) you need:
  • 4 sausages
  • 1 1/2 courgettes
  • 20 cubes of cheddar cheese
  • 20 strips of bacon
  • 1 onion
  • BBQUE sauce
  • Spices to your taste
  • Salt and pepper
  • Olive oil
Preparation:
First, cut the sausages into pieces (3-4cm thick).
Then wash the courgettes and cut them into equal slices. The width of the slices should be about 5 mm.
In the next step, peel the onion and cut it in half. Then separate it into the individual onion layers.
Then cut the cheese into pieces and wrap it in bacon so that it doesn't melt on the grill.
Then fill your skewers with meat, vegetables and cheese as you like. Finally, put the skewers on the barbecue for a few minutes.
Before you take the skewers off the barbecue again, quickly heat up the BBQ sauce in a small pot and brush the skewers with the warm sauce. Our favourite sauces are sauces from BBQUE. Because the recipes from BBQUE combine real American barbecue with Bavarian tradition. The sauces are of high quality and only contain natural starches and no preservatives or concentrates. This makes them an authentic and exciting taste experience on your barbecue evening.
And the delicious grilled sausage skewers are ready to be eaten! Enjoy your meal!
