Tolls, Journey & Traffic in Czech Republic

Toll - Vignette

On most motorways, expressways and some selected road sections in the Czech Republic, a toll fee (vignette) is required.
There are different types of vignettes that can be purchased depending on the type of vehicle and the duration of use. The most common vignettes are the 10-day vignette, the 1-month vignette and the annual vignette.
The vignettes can be purchased at border crossings, gas stations, post offices and in some cases even online. It is advisable to buy the vignette in advance to avoid fines or delays.
If you want to take the easy way, have a look at our partner for online vignettes. Here you will get your vignette without any waiting time, so that even short term trips are no longer a problem ;)

Journey

For your trip from Germany to Czech Republic, you can choose from several routes. The most popular and fastest route probably is via the A6 and A93 motorway, which take you through Bavaria and to Czech Republic. Another option is to take the A4, A17 and A13, which will take you through Saxony and past Dresden.
If you pick up your camper at our location near Munich, it is only about three and a half hours driving time until you reach the Czech border.

Traffic

The general speed limit is 130 km/h on motorways, 110 km/h on expressways and 50 km/h within built-up areas. Note, however, that lower speed limits may apply in some areas. Therefore, pay close attention to traffic signs.
It is also important that you have your dipped headlights on during the day in Czech Republic, because the lights are mandatory all year round.

Wild camping - Go or No-Go?

In Czech Republic, wild camping is officially not allowed. This means that camping outside designated campsites or private land is generally not allowed. Czech law states that camping is only allowed in specially designated places to avoid environmental damage and to protect nature.
However, there are a few options for overnight stays outside of campsites. You can ask for permission from the owners at private properties or farms for a fee. In addition, bivouacking is allowed, except in Bohemian Switzerland. Simple camping, however, is not allowed. That means, if you discover such a wonderful place where you reeeeeally want to stay for a night, then you may spend the night under the open sky there, if you leave the spot as clean as you found it the next morning.

The campsites for your motorhome in Czech Republic have relatively low prices with 10-30€ per night and are usually found in the form of large meadows directly on rivers or lakes. You will find a snack bar or a restaurant on almost every campsite, (free) WIFI with a bit of luck and electricity connections rather only on the better campsites.
Card payment is not possible at any campsites, so don't forget to bring cash (Czech crowns).
