Just a moment ago we were suffering from temperatures of 38, 39 and even 40 degrees Celsius and now we're already getting gloves, boots and hats from our closets. Summer is pretty much over and fall has begun and while some don't mind rainy days and low temperatures there are those who aren't ready to let go of summer just yet. We've picked out the best travel destinations for those of you who long for sun and warmth.
The best travel destinations to escape the cold
Amalfi Coast, Italy
If you're looking for the perfect sunset and a pleasantly warm sea you should consider going to the Amalfi Coast. There's a reason why countless campers are drawn to beautiful Italy year after year. Is it the unbeatable cuisine, the breathtaking sea or the ´dolce far niente`? It's hard to say but one thing is certain - the Amalfi Coast is definitely one of our hot travel tips, even in autumn. Even after the peak season in summer many campsites are still open. Information about wild camping in Italy can be found here.
If you've had enough of the sea (this has actually never happened to us but people are different, as we all know) and don't feel like swimming despite an average water temperature of 22° Celsius you can reach other highlights worth seeing if you're interestedin culture and history. Depending on your exact position you can reach them in no time. Pompeii, Naples and Sorrento are definitely worth a visist.
Andalusia, Spain
Andalusia is a very popular autumn destination. The impressive mountain landscapes and gorgeous beaches that make up the area put the southern Spanish region very high on our list. Many campgrounds in Spain also open their doors to you all year round. If you're thinking of going wild camping in Spain, here's what you need to know. But even on the campsites there seem to be fewer tourists compared to the peak season.
The water on the coasts of Andalusia is still warm in October - you can expect an average temperature of 20 degrees Celsius for swimming. During your beach vacation on the Costa de la Luz you will quickly forget the gray rainy days in Germany. Otherwise, there's plenty of Andalusian food to enjoy, culture and history to discover and Islamic architecture to admire. We would be very surprised if Andalusia wasn't among your top 10 destinations at the end of your trip.
Algarve, Portugal
The Algarve in the south of Portugal is not only worth a trip during the summer months. Especially in the autumn months you'll find relaxation, sun and Portuguese culture here. Fortunately, many campsites in the region are still open for visitors in the fall. More information about wild camping in Portugal can be found here.
The average water temperature in the Algarve is still around 20° Celsius in October so you can still enjoy a beach vacation or extended surfing days during the golden season. If you don't feel like going to the beach you'll still get your money's worth. The various cities in the Algarve - such as Faro or Lagos - offer interesting history and a wide range of cultural and gastronomic activities. For hiking enthusiasts there are more than enough hiking trails and routes with fantastic views over the sea and Portugal's landscape. You shouldn't miss out on the famous headland Cabo de São Vicente where impressive waves break on the rugged rocks. You can also spend beautiful sunsets in the evenings here.
Stay in Germany and hike, hike, hike!
Not quite as warm but just as beautiful and also cheaper: How about a nice hiking weekend in Germany or Austria? Before winter sets in, October offers you another opportunity to discover nature on foot in its most colorful state. Grab your favorite hiking buddies and your favorite Off model and head for the mountains. During the climb you might not be as warm as on the beach in Southern Europe but you can enjoy breathtaking views and a vacation feeling.
